Wisdom Rising: Turning Life Experience into Leadership Gold

By Vida Carlino, Founder and Inspirational Coach and Author – My Vida and Inspiration Space, and Lyn Hawkins, Founding Director of Business Women Australia (BWA)

In a world moving faster than ever, fuelled by technological acceleration, rising expectations, global conflict, and constant change, leadership is being redefined.

It is no longer enough to rely on experience, data, tech, and research. Leaders who are thriving and engaging their teams are drawn to a deeper purpose, connection, and focus.

Toward a Rising Wisdom

Life experience and all that has been learnt so far are important; however, experience alone does not create wisdom. Our workplaces, our communities, our homes are calling out for a rising wisdom that comes from deep self-awareness and lifelong learning.

Wisdom is born through integration and expression. It is not what leaders have been through that defines them; it is how they process experiences, grow their inner capacity, and show up. The term “walk the talk” matters more than ever before. The behaviour we exhibit, the things we say to ourselves and others, and the interactions we have, send a message to the world around us. These are keys that open the mirror to our “wisdom”.

True leadership wisdom is visible. It can be seen in how leaders:

  • Communicate under pressure
  • Align with their values
  • Make decisions with clarity
  • Show up with authenticity and integrity

Without conscious integration by working on “self”, building inner awareness, slowing things down, and embracing a curious mind, experiences get trapped in theory. With leadership “self-work,” we can harness all our experience and more to build extraordinary leadership capacity.

The Hidden Cost of High Performance

Despite outward success, many high-achieving leaders struggle beneath the surface. Through the work we do at Business Women Australia, we have noticed a growing pattern: leaders who appear accomplished externally are internally exhausted, burnt out, and operating in constant overdrive.

Modern leadership pressures have intensified:

  • The acceleration of tools like AI
  • Increasing complexity in business environments
  • Heightened expectations to produce more, faster

These challenges are increased by pressures at home, juggling the needs of loved ones, financial stress, expectations, and time pressures.

While stress is a natural biological response designed to protect us, many leaders today are no longer completing the stress cycle. Instead, they remain in a prolonged state of activation, affecting:

  • Decision-making
  • Emotional regulation
  • Physical health
  • Relationships

Over time, this erodes both personal wellbeing and leadership effectiveness.

Our culture of over-functioning, where doing more is often mistaken for leading better, is a trap.

Great News

The future does not belong to the busiest leaders. It belongs to the most resourceful ones.

The root of this issue is a surprising insight: great self-awareness is a big part of the solution

Research suggests that while 95% of people believe they are self-aware, only 10–15% truly are. Without awareness, leaders operate on autopilot, driven by habits, conditioning, and unconscious patterns rather than intentional choice.

Just imagine if 50% of people had greater self-awareness?

Building Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is the foundation of wisdom and capacity-building.  Tied to this is the importance of ‘trusting self’.

Without understanding our own triggers, reactions, and internal drivers, leaders struggle to fully trust themselves. They are reacting rather than responding, repeating patterns rather than evolving beyond them.

So where do we start?

By exploring over a decade of experiential leadership development pathways, we have noticed the following transformational insights:

  • Developing awareness requires something many leaders lack: space.
  • Space offers the time out to reflect and slow down, even in a micro moment.
  • Space provides the opportunity to be truly curious, to question, to dig deeper.
  • Space enables women to step out of routine thinking, out of the daily grind, removing others’ expectations.

Space allows deeper wisdom to rise.

Meaningful change, refreshing the mind, spirit, and body, does not happen in the known; it happens in the unknown.

Conscious Communication: A Leadership Superpower

Wisdom rising is aligned to conscious communication, and at Business Women Australia, we practice this at most of our events, so we can then take this new behaviour into the world. The power of conscious communication to build trust, reduce conflict, and improve relationships has a positive impact on every aspect of work and home life

It consists of three core practices:

  • Radical Listening

Listening without agenda, judgment, or the need to respond. This reduces misunderstandings and fosters psychological safety.

  • Intentional Speaking

Communicating with clarity and purpose, aligning words with values and desired outcomes.

  • Holding Space

Creating an environment where others feel safe to express themselves, without interruption, correction, or premature solutions.

Together, these practices shift conversations from transactional to transformational. They enable leaders to move from control to connection, an essential capability in today’s complex workplaces.

Wise leaders work hard to embrace this style of communication so we can create the space for those around us to be heard, empowered, and grow.

Wellbeing as a Leadership Imperative

Space for wisdom to rise, for the practice of conscious communication, and for personal wellbeing is driving the next generation of leadership.

This highlights the critical shift we see that is needed in every workplace; wellbeing is no longer a personal matter, it is a business strategy.

Organisations thrive when leaders:

  • Model self-care
  • Normalize healthy boundaries
  • Create environments where people feel safe and supported

Beware the disconnect!

Leaders often talk about wellbeing while modelling burnout behaviours, such as overwork and constant availability, eating their lunch at the desk, talking over everyone, controlling agendas, and sending conflicting signals to their teams.

Real cultural change, therefore, must begin with you, as a self-aware” leader, embracing a new way of being.

The Power of Retreat: Creating Space for Transformation

One of the most compelling decisions every leader can make is to ‘retreat’.

We like to consider retreat as a powerful catalyst for transformation because it removes individuals from their environments and immerses them in new experiences. This disruption allows leaders to:

  • Break habitual patterns
  • Gain a fresh perspective
  • Accelerate learning through emotional engagement

In retreat – the most valued settings and experiences enable leaders to experience profound shifts, not by becoming someone new, but by reconnecting with who they truly are.

A true retreat experience will feel like “coming home to a version of yourself you’ve never fully met.”

Leadership as Alignment, Not Achievement

Ultimately, Wisdom Rising reframes leadership as an inside-out process.

It is not about accumulating more skills, titles, or achievements. It is about:

  • Aligning with one’s values
  • Integrating lived experiences
  • Leading with awareness and intention

The most impactful leaders are not those who do the most, but those who are most aligned, present, and authentic.

A Call to Invest in Self

It is never the “perfect time” to invest in oneself, yet it is always the right time.

Leadership growth requires a conscious decision:

  • To pause instead of push
  • To reflect instead of react
  • To prioritize inner development alongside external success

Because at its core, leadership is not separate from the self.

How a leader shows up in business, in relationships, and in life is a direct reflection of how deeply they understand and trust themselves.

An Invitation to Business Women Australia’s Leader Retreats

These ideas are not just conceptual; they are being brought to life through the upcoming Business Women Australia Leadership Retreats, co-designed by the article authors, Vida Carlino and Lyn Hawkins. Taking place annually, this year (2026), the retreats will be held at Mount Lofty Estate in July and Blue Karma Resort in October. These immersive experiences are intentionally crafted to help women step out of the noise of daily leadership and into a space of reflection, recalibration, and growth. Participants are guided through a blend of evidence-based leadership development and experiential practices designed to deepen self-awareness, strengthen emotional intelligence, and align leadership with personal values and purpose.

Business Women Australia Retreats allow wisdom to rise.

They create the very conditions required: space, deep awareness, and conscious integration, allowing leaders to move beyond habitual patterns and into intentional, values-led leadership. Surrounded by a community of supportive women, participants not only gain clarity and renewed energy but also return with practical tools to lead with greater authenticity, confidence, and impact.
