What Holds – When Leadership Moves at Speed

The recent Business Women Australia Fireside Chat on Board Governance and Leadership offered more than a discussion on frameworks and responsibilities — it created a space where lived experience, insight, and reflection could meet with honesty and depth.
Guided by Andrea Durrant, the evening reflected what strong leadership communities can become when they are both grounded and generous. BWA continues to bring together women across sectors and stages of leadership, creating opportunities not only to learn but to think more deeply about the responsibilities they carry.
Across the conversation, a clear picture emerged: effective boards are not defined solely by their structures, but by how people show up within them. Technical capability, governance frameworks, and regulatory understanding remain essential — yet it is mindset, awareness, and the ability to engage with complexity in real time that often determine whether a board truly adds value.
Participants shared experiences from both highly effective and more challenging board environments. These reflections highlighted something subtle but important: how much influence individuals carry within collective systems, and how leadership is often exercised not only in formal resolutions, but in everyday interactions — how questions are asked, how tensions are handled, and how decisions begin to form.
As discussions moved toward artificial intelligence and the evolving role of boards, the importance of human judgment became even clearer. Technology can accelerate insight and execution, but it cannot carry responsibility. It cannot hold consequence. That remains entirely human.
For many women balancing leadership, family, and multiple roles at once, this reality is not new. Decisions are rarely confined to boardrooms — they move across work, home, and everything in between. The challenge is not only making decisions, but remaining present enough to truly hold them.
BWA creates space for that reflection — not as theory, but as lived leadership. Under Lyn’s leadership, the community continues to grow as a place where women can connect, contribute, and strengthen how they lead in complex environments.
Strong governance is supported by structure.
But it is sustained by presence — in the moment where decisions are not yet fully visible, but already shaping direction.
