For many years, leadership has been defined by capability.
Skills.
Experience.
Performance.
And while these remain important, they are no longer sufficient.
Across organisations, industries, and communities, I am seeing a growing recognition that leadership challenges today are not simply technical; they are human.
They sit in how we think.
How we relate.
How we respond under pressure.
And ultimately, in how we show up.
The Shift to Conscious Leadership
What is emerging is a different kind of leadership.
One that moves beyond doing and into being.
Conscious leadership is not about adding more tools or techniques. It is about developing awareness – of ourselves, of others, and of the systems we are part of.
It requires:
- self-awareness and reflection
- emotional and relational intelligence
- the ability to listen deeply and lead without certainty
- a willingness to take ownership for how we show up
This aligns with global frameworks such as the Inner Development Goals*, which recognise that inner capability is essential to addressing the complex challenges of our world.
Leadership is no longer just about outcomes.

At Business Women Australia, this shift has led us to rethink how leadership is developed.

Lyn Hawkins is the Founding Director of Business Women Australia and a recognised leader in conscious leadership, business growth, and organisational transformation.
Through her work, Lyn brings together commercial strategy with a deeper focus on how leaders think, relate, and show up; supporting women to lead with clarity, presence, and impact across business, community, and life.
Lyn has held senior roles with KPMG, HHG Legal Group, HLB Mann Judd, Telstra, and the Private Wealth Network, alongside General Management positions in technology-based businesses. She is also a Principal of a successful consulting practice, working with professional services firms across legal, accounting, engineering, and technology sectors.
Today, her work is centred on developing conscious leaders, particularly C-suite women, board directors, and senior executives, supporting them to move beyond performance and into leadership that is grounded, relational, and influential.
As a qualified coach and facilitator, Lyn is known for creating environments where women can step into greater awareness, ownership, and expression – both professionally and personally.
