Start Smart or Sink Fast: Why Skipping Market Research Kills Ventures

By Lyn Hawkins, National Director, Business Women Australia

Many new businesses and product launches fail because people skip doing important market research. In Australia, around 60% of small businesses cease operations within their first three years, often due to launching without validating demand. Descartes’ method of doubt reminds us to question assumptions – but too many of us fall in love with our ideas instead of testing them.

People love their ideas to be supported.  They skip doing the real research because they fear negative feedback, lack time, or believe we already understand the market. But without real customer feedback, we are building solutions to non-problems or adding another me-too product to the market. Research doesn’t just test feasibility – it reveals unmet needs, competition, pricing sensitivity, channel and customer behaviours.

For women in business, the stakes are even higher. Although female-founded businesses in Australia grow 1.5 times faster than male-led ones, they receive less than 3% of venture funding. That makes early validation critical – strong data helps win support and minimize risk. Wise entrepreneurs know: confidence backed by research builds resilience.

Success isn’t about guessing right or having an awesome idea. It’s about the work that wraps around the product or service. The asking, listening, and adjusting fast that helps uncover unmet needs and informs innovation.

Market research isn’t optional; it’s a requirement. Don’t skip this process. Design it to pressure test every aspect and improve upon a concept, or the venture might just deliver an expensive life lesson!

To help founders avoid these common pitfalls, we’ve created a Market Research Checklist. This practical guide covers key steps like identifying your target audience, analysing competitors, testing demand, and gathering actionable feedback. Whether you’re refining an idea or preparing to launch, this checklist will keep your research focused and effective. Download it, use it, and revisit it often – it’s your shortcut to smarter decisions and stronger results.
