Self-Awareness is Key: The Foundation of Inspired Living and Business

By Vida Carlino, Founder and Inspiration Coach

In a world that rewards performance and pace, the greatest advantage is not doing more; it’s becoming more.

As a transformational coach, speaker, and founder of My Vida and Inspiration Space, I have the privilege of working with women who are reshaping their lives, navigating transitions, redefining their purpose, and reconnecting with what matters most. Over the past decade or so, I’ve witnessed a singular truth time and time again: lasting change doesn’t begin with doing more; it starts with self-awareness.

Whether I support entrepreneurs, creatives, professionals, or women seeking to return to themselves after years of giving to others, my work is about turning attention inward and reconnecting to what matters most, realigning with purpose, values, and passions, and making conscious choices instead of defaulting to old habits.

And it all begins with this one powerful question: Am I self-aware?

Why Self-Awareness Matters

Research tells us 95% of people believe they are self-aware. Yet, according to organisational psychologist Dr Tasha Eurich, research reveals only 10–15% of us truly are. Dr Joe Dispenza points out that by age 35, much of what we do becomes a memorised set of behaviours, emotional reactions, beliefs, and attitudes running on autopilot. This means much of our life operates outside of conscious awareness.

We might think we are choosing our responses, goals, and direction, but are often simply reacting from old patterns, playing out inherited roles, or allowing unconscious biases to rule.

This is why self-awareness is not optional. It’s foundational. It’s the key to unlocking clarity and authenticity. Self-awareness helps us move from unconscious to conscious, from habit to alignment, from reacting to responding and to achieve what we really want from life.

The Self-Awareness Framework

In my work, I guide clients through practices that bring self-awareness to the surface. I use a simple but transformative framework:

  1. Intention – What matters most right now? Where should my focus be?
  2. Attention – What am I noticing? Where am I placing my energy?
  3. Attitude – Am I meeting this moment with curiosity and a sense of opportunity or judgment?
  4. Action – What conscious step will I take from this place of self-awareness?

This framework turns self-awareness from a mere concept into a lived, embodied way of being.

Why Self-Awareness Matters in Business and Life

There is no single definition of authentic leadership. Authenticity, by nature, is unique to each individual. What feels true for one person may not be true for another. Authentic leadership, therefore, isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept; it’s a reflection of our true selves.

You can be a heart-driven leader or a toxic one and still be authentic to who you are. That is why great leadership is rooted in self-awareness, not merely in being true to oneself.

We are all leaders in our own right, whether in our professional roles, at home, or within our communities. Yet, we often lead from habit, overdoing, over-giving, overworking, and over-stressing, leaving us mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausted.

Self-awareness helps us shift out of this cycle. It enables us to set clear boundaries, make intentional decisions, and create environments reflecting our core values, not just our KPIs or external achievements. We can prioritise our wellbeing and lead in a sustainable, aligned, and impactful way.

This is the core of inspired living. We become our inspiration and make a meaningful impact while caring for ourselves and others.

Self-Awareness: Know Thyself

The importance of self-awareness in personal and professional growth dates back to Socrates, whose wisdom was grounded in the principle: Know thyself.

  • Self-aware individuals are attuned to their internal and external environments, thoughts, emotions, and actions and how these shape their experiences.
  • They know how others perceive them and how their presence impacts those around them.
  • They know their strengths and weaknesses and are comfortable showing vulnerability and humanness.
  • Practice conscious communication, radical listening, intentional speaking and holding space for various views of reality.
  • Emotional independence can self-regulate without shutting down and bounce back from setbacks with renewed strength.
  • These individuals engage in continuous self-inquiry, remaining open to growth and differing viewpoints without feeling threatened.

Self-awareness is essential to personal growth and development, whether in business, relationships, or life.

What Sets My Work Apart

My approach integrates ancient wisdom, contemporary behavioural science, neuroscience, and mindfulness, grounded in a real-world application. I work with those seeking clarity, alignment, and a path that resonates deeply with their values.

Many clients come to me feeling overwhelmed, lost, uncertain, and off track but leave with renewed clarity, confidence, and a clear sense of direction.

This transformation is the power of self-awareness; it doesn’t just change what you do. It changes who you become.

A Simple Practice for Inspired Living

To begin your day with self-awareness, try this simple practice:

  1. Place your hand on your heart.
  2. Be still. Relax. Take three deep breaths.
  3. Ask yourself: What matters most to me today?

Let this awareness shape your attention, attitude, and actions to create a foundation for an inspired day.
