Closing the Confidence Gap: Key Takeaways from the Latest BWA Virtual Meeting
By Lyn Hawkins | Founder and National Director
At the recent Business Women Australia (BWA) catch-up, members explored how confidence impacts leadership, career progression, and business success. The session was filled with powerful insights, authentic conversations, and practical strategies designed to help women step more fully into their capabilities.
The Power of Confidence in Leadership
One of the strongest themes to emerge was the confidence gap between men and women. Women are more likely to underestimate their abilities and self-qualify out of opportunities, even when they are fully capable. This self-limiting behaviour can hold women back from promotions, board appointments, or scaling their businesses.
To help close this gap, we explored techniques such as reframing fear scripts, visualisation, and “exposure practice” – deliberately stepping into opportunities that feel uncomfortable in order to grow. Shifting focus from what is feared to what is wanted was highlighted as a powerful way to create better outcomes.
Building Confidence: Daily Practices That Make a Difference
The group shared practical tools to strengthen confidence day by day. These included:
Noting three small wins daily to reinforce a sense of progress.
Reframing negative self-talk into positive, empowering language.
Practising visible confidence – whether through public speaking, facilitation, or simply voicing ideas in meetings.
Setting up accountability partners or small peer groups to check in with monthly.
We all took some time out to consider what a 10% increase in visible confidence could mean for our professional lives over the next quarter.
Connecting, Learning and Growing Together
What was very clear in our meeting is that confidence isn’t just about mindset; it is about action, and support. Celebrating milestones is one of the key things to do when flexing confidence. So, we shared our small and big achievements with each other – ranging from keynote invitations, business wins, and personal breakthroughs. Plus, we set clear action items we want to implement for the weeks ahead.
Many of us also committed to being more visible on LinkedIn, engaging in virtual coffee catch-ups, and practising confidence-building skills in everyday work.
Upcoming Opportunities to Build Confidence

Flexing Confidence is a muscle you can build.
This session was a reminder that confidence isn’t something you either have or don’t have – it’s a muscle you continue to build. By celebrating wins, practising reframing, and leaning into opportunities, women can shift how they see themselves and how others perceive them.
A small increase in visible confidence can open doors, unlock growth, and transform the way you lead.
What would a 10% boost in your confidence look like in your professional life?
